Winter in Greece is not just the off-season. But for some people that is a good reason to go there. Winters are mild in Athens and contrary to popular opinion the islands don't actually close down like a summer amusement park would. There are hotels that stay open year round and restaurants too, and a few days on an island in December or January is a slice of what island life is really like.
Outside Athens, the emphasis shifts more exclusively to ancient sites; the beaches along the Attic coast are functional enough escapes for Athenians, but hardly priorities if you are moving on to the islands. Of the sites, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion is the most popular trip, and rightly so, with its dramatic cliff top position above the cape. Lesser-known and less visited are the sanctuaries at Rhamnous and Brauron (Vravróna), both rewarding ruins with beaches nearby. Dedicated Classical pilgrims might also take in the burial mound at Marathon, near a sandy beach, and the Sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis (Elefsína).
It can be very interesting to visit various Athens gift shops. Athens has beautiful gifts, especially handmade crafts. The prices are set by the government, so it is not worth the trouble to bargain.
We had seen all the Athens sightseeing using a tourist guide from Athens, after that went to Crete and had an unforgettable week on the beach. There was a very good service in the hotel and the sea view was just splendid.
